ITM Power continued to ink deals with partners across Europe, this time with the national rail operator in Germany, the largest in Europe.
ITM Power has signed a Letter of Intent with DB Systemtechnik, the engineering arm of Deutsche Bahn, to form an innovation and research partnership focused on green energy solutions for transport and critical infrastructure.
The agreement builds on the broader collaboration established with Deutsche Bahn in March 2025 and will explore the use of green hydrogen across rail, bus, and truck fleets, as well as the energy resilience needs of railway infrastructure itself. The partners will also look at production, sourcing and storage of green fuels to support day-to-day operations.
As a first step, the two will run a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study to scope out the technical setup, site integration and commercial framework for deploying ITM’s electrolyser technology at Deutsche Bahn sites. FEED studies typically pave the way for firm equipment orders, positioning ITM well for follow-on revenue should the pilots progress to deployment.
Deutsche Bahn is one of Europe’s largest transport operators, and a serious push into hydrogen across its fleet and infrastructure would represent a meaningful long-term opportunity for ITM’s electrolyser business. It also fits a broader pattern of large industrial and infrastructure players moving from feasibility into engineering design, a stage where ITM tends to convert engagement into orders.
Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power, said: “By working alongside Protium in a framework ranging from equipment supply to investment, we are bringing together our complementary expertise. Together, we can deliver highly competitive hydrogen with strong long-term economics and help accelerate the UK hydrogen market.”
The announcement comes hot on the heels of a deal with Protium Green Solutions and after ITM’s strategic collaboration with Rheinmetall on the Giga PtX defence fuels project.
