Retail investors piled into mining and financial stocks in September, according to data from interactive investor, with Glencore topping the platform’s most-bought list.
The investment platform said Glencore had climbed from fifth place to become its most-bought stock, overtaking usual favourites such as SpaceX and Nvidia, as investors bought the dip after the miner’s shares fell on softer Chinese steel demand and lower iron ore prices.
Financials were also in demand, with Legal & General, Barclays and Lloyds all in the top 10, as buyers returned despite bond-market turbulence.
Among investment trusts, two property vehicles: Schroder Real Estate Investment Trust and Tritax Big Box, appeared in the top 10 for the first time. Interactive investor said the property sector, under pressure since 2022 as interest rates rose, was drawing investors hoping it had reached a turning point, with some seeing it as a way to play the boom in AI infrastructure. Scottish Mortgage reclaimed the top trust spot.
Caution remained evident, however, with money market funds among the most popular choices as some investors kept cash in low-volatility holdings. Strategy, the bitcoin-holding company, returned to the stock list after a rally of more than 22%, as the cryptocurrency climbed above $85,000.
