Helix Exploration spuds fifth well at Montana helium field

The expansion of Helix Exploration’s Rudyard helium field in Montana is well underway with the drilling of a new well

The US-focused helium producer said it spudded the Ross #1 well, intended as the field’s fifth production well at the Northern Dome, on 23 October, after receiving its permit.

The well, targeting the same proven formations as its existing producers, will be drilled to about 5,500 feet over around 21 days, followed by testing. If successful, the company will connect it to its processing plant.

Helix, which resumed production at Rudyard earlier this month, is currently producing commercial helium from three wells and filling tanker trailers for sale, with a fourth well awaiting testing before being brought online. It said it was reviewing locations for further wells as part of its expansion.

The firm currently has agreements in place for its entire offtake but has faced compliance issues and has been forced to shut off production as a result.

Bo Sears, Chief Executive Officer, commented:”By virtue of controlling our own drilling equipment we were able to prepare the drill pad and mobilise the rig to the Ross #1 well site swiftly to be ready to spud the well within 2 days of the MBOGC’s permit approval.”

“Rudyard operations are in full swing. We’re actively sending helium to our customer while simultaneously advancing a pipeline of future wells in multiple locations.”
